Steve Coleman Master Class

SCA Presents Steve Coleman Master Class — FREE for UCLA Students!

UCLA’s Student Committee of the Arts with the help of CAP UCLA will be hosting a master class with Steve Coleman on October 15th in Schoenberg Music Building. The event will take place the day after Steve Coleman’s guest performance with Vijay Ayer in Royce Hall.

Steve Coleman is a jazz alto saxophonist, famous for his group, Steve Coleman and the Five Elements. As a both a composer and performer, Coleman is the founder of M-Base, an innovative group of musicians who play music not in accordance with regular boundaries of genre or style, but rather focus on a certain way of thinking about music. It utilizes a universal approach to music that focuses on personal expression and growth in creativity over all else. In addition, Coleman is a decorated ethnomusicologist who has done research in such countries as Ghana, Cuba, and India, often focusing on percussion or the transmission of music in non-Western cultures.

As an asset to ethnomusicology, jazz, and the music realm as a whole, UCLA’s Student Committee of the Arts is glad to host this event on October 15th.
